The best birthday party venues in Hawthorn
From pub function rooms to leafy beer gardens and private wine cellars — where to host a birthday in Hawthorn, whatever the guest list.
Updated
Hawthorn is a genuinely easy place to throw a birthday. There’s a good spread of pub function rooms, characterful bars and relaxed outdoor spots, most within a short walk of Glenferrie Station. Here’s how we’d think about it.
For a big, lively party
If you’re expecting a crowd and want room to dance, look at the Level One room at the Hawthorn Hotel. It’s a light upstairs space with its own bar and a dance floor, and works on a minimum-spend basis rather than a flat hire fee. The Upstairs Bar at The Kilburn is a similarly good pick for a cocktail-style party with a private bar.
For something more relaxed
For a laid-back afternoon, the Beer Garden at The Kilburn is semi-covered and heated, so it holds up outside summer. It’s dog-friendly too, which is a nice touch for a casual catch-up.
For an intimate celebration
Marking a milestone with a smaller group? The Cellar Room at Luton Lane Wine Bar seats around 18 amongst the wine, and the Ethel Room at the Hawthorn Hotel is a cosy semi-private lounge for a relaxed dinner.
A few practical tips
- Guest count drives everything. Filter by the number of people first — it quickly rules spaces in or out.
- Watch the minimum spend. Many pub and bar rooms waive hire fees in exchange for a food-and-drinks minimum, which varies by day.
- Ask about restrictions. Some rooms have rules around 21st birthdays or music curfews.
When you’ve got a shortlist, you can enquire with up to three spaces at once through HireSpace, or ask us to find three options for you.
